Elizabeth Connell

About Us

With over 20+ years of experience, Liz has established herself as a highly skilled, tenacious, and insightful litigator in both criminal defense and personal injury matters.  Liz approaches her cases with compassion, focusing on the client and tailoring each case to their individual needs.   She has dedicated her career to representing the rights of others in multiple jurisdictions in Maryland, Colorado, and Federal Court.  From the very beginning, she takes a proactive approach to her cases, which has resulted in numerous dismissals and favorable settlements as a result of thorough investigation, aggressive pretrial litigation, and her negotiation skills.  Liz is not afraid to take her cases to trial and fight for her clients’ rights, having tried almost 100 jury trials and countless bench trials in both criminal defense and personal injury cases.   Putting people first is her philosophy.

As a young journalist with the Daily Times of Nigeria Newspapers, I saw first-hand the harsh realities of a military dictatorship. My colleagues were imprisoned for publishing articles and stories the regime deemed critical. People critical of the government were either killed or imprisoned. It was then that I decided that I wanted to make a difference in society. The journey for a better opportunity to meaningfully contribute to a better society brought me to the United States in 1988. Like most immigrants, I struggled to make ends meet; washing dishes, flipping burgers, and going to school in pursuit of my dreams. My experience as a journalist in Nigeria also opened my eyes to the injustice and sufferings of the less privileged in our society. It made me more sympathetic to the plight of the average citizen. I decided that the legal profession would provide me the best opportunity to fight for the less privileged in our society. I enrolled at the American University Law School in 1993 and graduated in 1996 with a Juris Doctorate Degree in Law. Armed with a law degree, I began my career as a lawyer in 1997 after being admitted to Maryland and District of Columbia bars. I began my career as a court appointed criminal defense lawyer under the Criminal Justice Act in the District of Columbia. As a CJA attorney from 1997 to 2000, I represented thousands of indigent criminal defendants. I knew then that I had found my passion: helping the underprivileged and fighting for those who did not have the means to fight for themselves. In 2002, I joined the Public Defender’s Office as an Assistant Public Defender where I represented thousands of indigent criminal defendants in misdemeanor and felony cases. As a felony attorney with the Office of the Public Defender, I represented many clients charged with serious offenses, such as murder, rape, attempted murder, rape, and drugs. I also had many bench and jury trials, and there is nothing more fulfilling to me than getting an innocent person, who has been wrongly accused, off. In 2007, I started my own private practice doing criminal defense work, personal injury, and immigration law. Empathy is the key to having a successful personal injury practice, and my Nigerian experience has thought me a lot of it. Your clients want to know that they have someone fighting for them against the big insurance companies and that’s exactly what I do for my PI clients.
